Getting Started
With the introduction of Secrets of the Obscure, getting the Skyscale mount is much easier now. The new collection have two potential time-gated items but these can be avoided by paying a higher price, so you can get your mount as fast as you do the collection.
The collection will unlock as soon as you train the first mastery in Flight Training.
Before starting this Skyscale Guide, I will list some of the requeriments to consider, and of course you will need the Secrets of the Obscure expansion. Completing the story is not mandatory but it is recommended as you will need some of the masteries.
If you need an introduction at how the Rifts work, check this guide: CLICK!

Masteries/Skills
Masteries
- Air Rescue
- XP required: 571,500
- Points: 3
- Learn to mount the skyscale in midair to save yourself while falling.
- Rift Repair
- XP required: 609,600
- Points: 4
- Learn to use your skyscale’s magic resources to close rifts. This will draw out the magic trapped within and reveal new flight paths.
- Wall Launch
- XP required: 698,500
- Points: 5
- Learn to launch off walls with your skyscale, providing a moment of respite and the ability to fly to greater heights.
Skills
- Blast: Engage. While on land, leap into the air and breathe fire ahead of you. If in the air, descend toward the ground before attacking
- Wall Jump: While clinging to a wall, hold to charge a jump. Release to jump.
- Descend: While flying, decrease altitude.
- Dash: While airborne, rapidly dash forward.
Movement/Control
After learning the three masteries, general movement is controlled by the following default controls:
- Directional movement – WASD + Mouse
- Dash – V
- Increase altitude – Spacebar
- Decrease altitude – C
- Increase/decrease pitch – Mouse up/down
- Cling to wall – W (hold)
- Wall Launch – (while clinging to a wall) Spacebar
Once the Skyscale is fully unlocked, the player will have additional control options available as keybinds. In your Control Options menu, under Mounts, you will find Mount Ability 1 and Mount Ability 2. For the Skyscale, these keybinds translate to Dash and Decrease altitude respectively. By default, your character can dash using the V, and decrease altitude using C. Alternatively the engage skill can be also used to decrease altitude, but this will cause the player to dismount once they reach the ground.
Players can control the pitch (up to approximately 30° from horizontal) of the Skyscale by aiming the movement direction up or down with the Mouse while in flight.
Flying
Like the Griffon, holding space will cause a Skyscale to take flight. Unlike the Griffon, a Skyscale is able to hover in the air indefinitely, and can freely ascend and descend in place (for example, ascending by 500 units will cost around 37% of the green flight meter above the Endurance bar, then descending 500 units will refill that same 37% of the flight meter). However, flying laterally will begin to consume the flight meter, reducing the maximum height that the Skyscale is able to attain, until it is eventually forced to land. Upon landing, the flight meter instantly refills despite the flight bar not immediately reflecting this (for example, simply ‘tapping’ the ground will give you an entire flight meter the moment you touch the ground).
If a Skyscale hovers too close to the ground, it will slowly descend and then land.
Descending while the flight meter is already full will waste the excess, and will reduce the Skyscale’s maximum altitude.
Flight Mechanics
The flight mechanics of the Skyscale can be described as a cylinder of 1350 units height (300 units higher than the Springer) and zero width, with the bottom of the cylinder at the height where the Skyscale left ground. The Skyscale’s altitude cannot exceed the top of this cylinder. Flying laterally in any direction will reduce the maximum height of said cylinder, until it reaches the minimum altitude, in which the Skyscale will be forced to land (or go below if possible). The current maximum height of the cylinder can be tracked by the green flight meter above the Endurance bar.
This means that the Skyscale’s flight is limited by a “canopy” of about 9,400 units (the length of a Keg Brawl field). However there are a number of ways to refill the flight meter temporarily, and therefore allow rider and Skyscale to exceed the canopy.
Exceeding the Canopy
Currently the methods for allowing the Skyscale to fly higher and further include:
- The Dash (default V) action, which consumes Endurance to propel the Skyscale forwards, temporarily ignoring the maximum altitude; also does a roll in the air
- The Crystal Champion Mastery skill Bond of Vigor will refill 50% of the flight meter, and refills the Endurance bar completely;
- The Skyscale Mount Mastery Wall Launch can be used to convert one Endurance bar into about 66% flight meter while the Skyscale is clinging to a wall;
- Touching nodes from the flight paths formed after a Rift Repair node will refill the flight meter;
- Touching an Volatile Magic node will refill (and reset) the flight meter; and lastly,
- Being propelled upwards by a Branded Tornado or Claw of Kralkatorrik will refill, but not reset the flight meter.
However, using any of these means to exceed the limits of the canopy will reduce the maximum possible flight meter that can be subsequently recovered, as indicated by a red bar that fills from the right side of the meter.
This red bar will force a rapid decrease in altitude until it’s depleted.
Besides landing, the only way to reduce the red bar is by touching a Volatile Magic node. Using Bond of Vigor doesn’t reduce the red bar, but fills flight meter on top of it.
While both bars of the flight meter coexists, the red one will deplete the green one. Pressing Spacebar to increase the altitude will take priority, consuming the green bar while increasing the red bar.

Wall Clinging
The Skyscale can cling to walls by holding W, or activating autorun. While clinging, the Endurance bar and the flight meter won’t recharge, and skills such as Bond of Vigor will have their cooldown frozen. Releasing the key will make the mount bounce backwards, releasing the grip to the wall.
If Wall Launch is unlocked, it can be used by holding Spacebar while clinging to a wall. This will convert one Endurance bar into about 66% flight meter. Releasing Spacebar will cause the skyscale to launch upwards, expending about 20% of its flight meter. As stated before, using the newly obtained teal gauge will increase the red one.
To avoid the automatic wall grab in order to land on small ledges, it’s possible to move using only A, S or D, decreasing altitude with C if required. Using the dash at an angle will produce a similar result, it won’t trigger the automatic grab even against a wall.
Check this video out for extra tips on extending your flight duration.

Draconis mons for devouroer food
Is it worth doing this collection if you already have the skyscale?
If you have the materials, this collection shouldn’t take longer than a few hours. One hour after completion, it unlocks another achievement “A New Look” which rewards the Kryptis Skyscale skin. I haven’t completed it so I don’t know how difficult it is, but GuildJen had said they’ll make a guide for it in the next few days. It’ll be up to you how worth that Skyscale skin is.
Ok Thank you
And this is how much easier and/or cheaper/faster than the original way to get the Skyscale?
This method is significantly cheaper and easier. In addition to the original Skyscale method costing more gold, it requires ownership of Path of Fire and all of Living World Season 4 (and a stack of each of its account bound currencies). Additionally, the original method required you to feed the Skyscale treats instead of just obtaining them, and this was time gated. Additionally, while finding the egg for “A New Friend” is annoying, you have to do something similar 3 times in the original method. I recommend comparing this method to the one described on the “Skyscale/Walkthrough” wiki page for further detail.
For the Skyscale of Spirit, make sure you don’t have a Quartz Cristal in your inventory
Hello thank you for this guild, is it recommend to do this guild without the new expansion secret obscures? just finish eod and got my griffon mount here
This way to get the skyscale is faster and easier, you require the new expansion
So if I was part way through on the original Skyscale version requirements, if I start this new version none of what I did previously counts? I’m sorry I’m so confused lol
You can start this one without problems and you will unlock the mount faster, then later you can continue the other for extra masteries. And once you completed both collections you can start a third collection for an exclusive skin if you want to do that.
Spent 3 hrs and got no tasty devourer carapace in Lowland Burns Waypoint – [&BE4DAAA=].
Went to Devourer’s Mouth in Plains of Ashford [&BIEBAAA=] and got it after 3 killls.
At lowland burns? Those are branded devourers, right? They would use the branded loot table, not the devourer loot table.
Thx for the info
Thanks a lot for perfect guide !!! I had just one problem during farming of Devourer carapax. I did farm it in area where word boss Shatterer appears. I spent a lot of time there since there is a lot of devourers. It has not dropped there. I moved to one of low level locations as advised by GW2 wiki and then it dropped from second mob .
Ty I updated that info
So, i don’t need to complete PoF and Living SS4?
I already have the Skyscale from LWS4 what are the benefits I will get if I do this aside from Skin will it make my Skyscale stronger?
Thank you so much for this guide!
bird whistle seems to be bugged. Gortho isn’t a merchant for me, and his quest never seems to reset
Yes it is reported that the event chain related to the this npc can get stuck in some maps, your only chance is to try to find a different instance of the map. You can try using the command /ip on the in-game chat to see the map instance number, and try later in hope to land in a different instance. Otherwise the best option is to send a ticket to anet support.
Looks like they fixed the Elonian Sandpaper. Used to cost 2 Provisioners token, now updated to 3 like the other items.
Ty for letting me know!
Hi, I have followed this guide to obtain SoTo Skyscale. Do I have to do the entire collection in PoF to unlock PoF Masteries?
I have completed Living World 4 Episode 6 and met with Gorrik, It unlocks the collection but no PoF Skyscale Masteries.
Yes you need to complete the entire PoF collection for those masteries.
Hi JEN,
Thank you for the reply.
Sadly, you are right. I was hoping it can be unlocked without completing the Skyscale collection Twice since I already have SoTo Skyscale.
Summary:
PoF Skyscale masteries will only unlock AFTER completing the entire PoF Collection (Even if you have SoTo Skyscale unlocked).
Players who are going for Legendary “Vision” will need PoF Skyscale collection done.
Unlocking SoTo Skyscale first is optional but certainly helps in the PoF Collection process.
So I gotta ask. I unlocked the skyscale through SotO, but I can’t do the PoF skyscale masteries until I do the old collection or did they fix that?
You need to do the PoF collection for those masteries, that’s how it is.
Im doing the blood skyscale and ive killed over 100 enemies and i dont have the soaked in blood buff either what should i do?
Are you using the same character?
For Herder Lyot the waypoint you wanted to reference is likely the Afgar’s Waypoint, not Refugee Peak (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Herder_Lyot)
Thanks for the excellent guide(s)!
Heavy-Duty Dolyak Blanket
Purchase a Heavy-Duty Dolyak Blanket from Herder Lyot near Bouldermouth Vale in Lornar’s Pass. West of Refuge Peak Waypoint – [&BFIGAAA=] .
